Thailand - Chiang Mai - Doi Inthanon National Park

We took a day tour of Doi Inthanon National Park, which included waterfalls, the king’s and queen’s pagodas and their gardens, a visit to a Hmong hill tribe market, the highest point in Thailand, and a hike through a cloud forest with views of the surrounding mountains. Here are some highlights.

Wachirathan Falls

Another view of  Wachirathan Falls

I guess technically these are the foothills of the Himalayas, but they are a long way from Mount Everest (in both distance and elevation). Elevations in the park range from 800 to 2565 meters (2600 to 8400 feet). It feels refreshingly cool up here, but it's not high enough to ever get snow.

The King and Queen Pagodas, built to commemorate the monarchs' 60th birthdays in 1987 (his) and 1992 (hers).

Panoramic Point, with an expansive view of...clouds. A bit of a disappointment, but not a complete surprise, I suppose, given that we were in fact in a cloud forest.

The Queen Pagoda as seen from the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail during a brief break in the swirling mist.

At the highest point in Thailand, which isn't really the highest point in Thailand. You have to go another 100 meters up the trail, but this is where they put the sign with English translation, so this is where they recommend you get your photo taken. Elevation 2565 meters (8400 feet).

Another waterfall

Earth-Boring Scarab Beetle (I think). When you rub its back it makes this noise. Very Cool.
