Townsville - Charters Towers

Charters Towers is an old mining town about an hour and a half inland from Townsville. Gold was first discovered in 1871 and many of the town buildings date to that late 19th century gold rush era. One of our favorite stops was the Zara Clarke Museum. Staffed by volunteers and full of donated items from the local community, it housed a fun collection of artifacts related to mining, transportation, the military, medical care, vintage clothing, musical instruments, kitchenware, and the eclectic bric-a-brac of everyday life.

Stock Exchange Arcade. Trading offices back in the gold rush days. Now shops and a café.

88 year old Lorraine, volunteer at the Zara Clark Museum. Sharp as a tack.  After hearing our American accents she chatted us up about the American soldiers who were stationed here during WWII, the Las Vegas shootings and Trump.
